Two big tipoff's that this is [***] call from someone claiming to be from the irs. 1) for me, it was an obvious recording that's starting in the middle - a gentleman with a very thick indian accent 2) i received the call from "washington d.C." at what would be 7pm in the evening. The irs's hours = 8am - 5pm only.
**i work for a cpa. It is a well-known fact that the irs will only communicate with you in writing initially, they will not call! In fact, if you call the irs when you are on hold they have an outgoing message warning of scammers that call and leave threatening messages. They emphasize the fact that they do not call & not to fall for it.
I returned a call to 202-629-9001 and saying they were from department of the treasury; however, they were unable to discuss the matter at this time. Thick indian accent. Called the previous day, 22 july and left a message threatening me to call them right back or my attorney.
Received a call on our answering machine, time stamped at 11:15am today. In a threatening voice said that this was in regards to a criminal case, file number CF 93151, that we needed to call or our attorney should call 202-629-9001
Hey, you and I must be joint criminal defendants in CF 93151! Maybe we retain the same defense counsel and save on attorneys' fees? This is so pathetic. The only criminal case which needs to be brought is pursuant a federal felony indictment against these scammers. Impersonating the IRS should be alone enough to put a few of the folks in this organization behind bars, leaving aside all the other violations, mail fraud, etc. And it would appear these guys are easy to catch -- it appears all the Government has to do is follow the scammer's instructions and grab him at the source of payment (presumably the end game of the scam is the caller's payment of money). WHERE IS OUR GOVERNMENT????
