Got the call from "WAMU" at 6pm on a Saturday (2-12-2011) to say my card was locked and asking for my 16-digit account number to unlock it. WAMU doesn't exist and if they did they wouldn't call on a weekend evening and use a creepy recording to get my info. So I played along and entered bogus numbers, which it said weren't recognized as existing accounts. Hung up and called back. It rang for quite some time, then I got the recording that you get from Sprint if your phone is shut off - that guy saying the call cannot be completed. Reported it to the FCC and my local Attorney General.
Got an obvious phishing call - ditto everything Gunny said.
Remember folks: never give your credit card number to someone who calls you unsolicited. If you're concerned a call may be legit, call your actual institution yourself to check, using the number from your statements or their real website.
Just got a call to my cell phone number which displayed 305-278-0200 as Caller ID.
States that the call is from Washington Mutual and that my account is being locked and to press 1 to be connected to the security department.
I hung up. Almost certainly an attempt to collect my information by a fraudster. The Caller ID is probably fake, so the business at this number should not be blamed.
Fishing scam: The recorded message said that my credit card with Washington Mutual Bank had been locked and that I needed to press 1 to get to their security department. WaMu went down the tubes and I never banked with them anyway. Pressed 1. They asked for my 16 digit credit card #. Right. Hung up.
