I received a call from this phone number that left me a voice mail stating that his name is Patrick Wilson and he was calling from United Processing legal department and if I did not return the call immediately they were going to start legal proceedings. No description of what the legal matter entailed, he just assumed that it was what it was and I had better contact him or else. He also contacted an old employer and threatened them legally if they did not give him information.

This is a scam aiming to extort money from consumers. There is no such thing as United Pay Services, United Processing Legal Department or United Investigation Department of Law.

Whenever someone calls you and demands money to prevent you from being arrested, it is ALWAYS a scam. No debt collector -- let alone a criminal posing as a debt collector -- has the authority to have anyone arrested for anything.

Ignore their threats and report their attempted extortion to the following law enforcement agencies:

1) File a report with your local police. Most police departments can take a complaint over the phone. If these crooks call your workplace, ask your employer to assist you by filing a complaint with the police, too.

2) File a report online with the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov and be sure to tell them that these crooks are trying to extort money from you using illegal threats.

3) The call is from a cell number in Florida, so file a complaint with Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum at http://myfloridalegal.com/contact.nsf/contact?Open&Section=Attorney_General   McCollum's office is very familiar with this kind of scam and has been very aggressive in pursuing them.

4) File a complaint with your state's attorney general. The contact information for each state's attorney general is listed at www.naag.org  Just scroll down to the national map and click on your state.

5) File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission here: https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01

If these scammers call you again, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to federal and state law enforcement. To help law enforcement, try to keep all their messages and, if legal in your state, record your conversations with them. (Radio Shack type stores sell inexpensive phone recorders.)

Hope this helps.

Same gentleman identifying himself as Patrick Wilson of United Law Investigation called for a coworker. I knew that this was a scam, but played along to see what he would say so I could warn her.  He wanted my name, her supervisor, manager, the administrative dept and human resources department at our place of employment.  He went so far as to give me a badge number, and stated he would be contacting the county government and to inform her and the human resources department that she would be arrested soon.
