They could be barely legit. Scammers ask charities if they can raise money for them using their name. The charities get a small percentage of the funds raised without having to do anything so the charities agree. The charities could get as little as 1% of the money raised. I tell them that sounds like a great cause so I'm going to the police station and donate directly. That frustrates the caller and you'll hear excuses why you should give to the scammer.
