My daughter got a new phone for Christmas and some how these people have her number 14 calls in the past 3 days! She is 17, how do I make these stop? She said the people are very hostile and demanding so she hung up but they called right back and screamed for hanging up.

She just got phone and doesn't want to change number again so fast.

Received 2 calls from 718-395-9477. They claimed to be from the Federal Government Grant division but spoke with a very heavy Indian / Pakastani accent. They said I had been selected to receive a $7000 grant and never have to pay it back. They then gave me a "pin" number and asked me to write it down. This first part seemed fishy, but then the second part just simply smelled like fish. They actually asked me if I lived near a Wal-mart (who doesn't) and told me to go to my nearest Wal-mart and call them back with the pin number that they gave me and they would give me further instructions on how to "claim" my grant. What they would most likely ask for is my bank account information to allow them to "deposit" the money or something similar. Then I would find out later that my bank account is mysteriously empty. Someone should arrest these people before they steal some poor old lady's life savings.

It would not let me edit my posting, but I did want to provide the National Do Not Call Registry that you can register up to 3 numbers at one time. It will require an email address to confirm the registry and the website is owned and operated by the Federal Trade commission. That is the only way I know of to at least try and stop these people from calling.

https://www.donotcall.gov/ or go to http://www.ftc.gov/ and click the link about half way down the page.

Did they ask for you by name or give your address or anything like that?  Unless they somehow connect the number to your identity, there is nothing special about your number,  Numbers are just there.

Suppose I set a computer to start calling a particular area code, say 202, followed by 7 digits, starting with 000-0000 going until it reaches 999-9999.  (I know that's 10 million numbers but that's nothing to a computer.)  Then I instruct it to start the same process with the next area code 203, and then another, etc.  Eventually it would call your number and every other phone number in the country.  Listed or unlisted doesn't matter, they're just numbers to the computer.  There is no mystery about numbers.

But if they start asking for you by name, etc, there is something else involved. It is no longer just a number, it is now YOUR number they are calling.  Then you can ask how they got YOUR number.

Try "trick's" suggestion, posted above.  Save the number (since it is a repeat spammer) to her contacts list and set the ringtone for that caller to "no ring" or "silent".  When they call again, the first thing you'll hear is the "missed call" tone, which always makes me smile!
