There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Claimed to be the IRS saying they were filing  suit against me.

Received a call today from this number. They left a message saying, "inform you that IRS is filing lawsuit against you. To get more information about this case file, please call immediately on our department number 917-688-4186. I repeat 917-688-4186. Thank you."

The call showed it was coming from India, even though the area code is Brooklyn, NY. I was half tempted to call it back and hear the scam play out. But it's not worth the time. Wish they could prosecute whoever they are.

3 calls today I'm elderly so I don't need this harassment. So your sure its a scam?

I got several calls from 1-917-688-4186 stating the IRS is auditing me for fraud. The guy had an Indian accent, and couldn't answer any of my questions. I asked him for proof, and he sent me to www.irs.com website. I asked for proof, and he hung up on me.
