Got the call; shouldn't have answered; pressed 5; said yes to ID questions; decided to call back; was assured that since I pressed 5 it was a legitimate call; politely warned that if I did not want to proceed, he had many other people on-line waiting for this service; hung up; stupidly called back. Now looking up to see if I really did any harm.
I just got a call from these people too. The recording told me to press 3 to talk to a person so I did, just to find out what their scheme was. After listening to bad elevator music for a while I get to talk to a guy named Brian who asked who my electricity provider is. He then wanted my account number with my electricity provider. He didn't tell me the name of the company or exactly what they were offering until I asked. He claimed that he was with Independent Energy and that he could help lower my electricity bill by having ComEd buy it from a cheaper provider. I told him I wanted to call back and he gave me a number to do so.
I don't really know what this is about but I strongly suspect that this is SCAM. I recently received a number of calls from the same area code from a company that claimed that they could lower my interest rates on my credit cards. That was also a recording that told me to press 3 to talk to a person, very similar to this call. The credit card call is a verified scam. I suspect that these are the same people that are now claiming to be from Independent Energy. DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION! This is not a legit call. Legit companies don't make robo-calls and offer to save you money just because.
Independent Energy does exist and the call back number I got does go to Indeoendent Energy. Independent Energy is probably a legit company but those who called are most likely not from Independent Energy. The people calling with the credit card scam claimed to be working for Visa and they gave out Visa's real customer service number when I asked for a call back number. Visa verified that it was a scam and that they've received many calls regarding this.
THIS IS MOST DEFINITELY A SCAM TO GET INFO FROM YOU. DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY INFO TO ANYONE OVER THE PHONE.
