We just received a similar inquiry for our holiday rental in San Diego County for two weeks in May 09. The initial e-mail address used was
[email protected]. The telepone number used appeared to be a UK number (44 447023031826). After I had sent a price quote I received a reply from
[email protected].
The text reads as follows:

Subject: Re: Paymentinfo
Hello, Thanks for getting back to us with the quote,I will book it,The payment bank official check, it will be issued in the US. I and my wife concluded to make full payment, so we can have confirmation of booking. Send me the below info:
Full name.
Address
City
Zipcode
State
Home phone
Cell phone
Total cost plus tax and utilities or deposit.
Immediately i have the above info, the payment will be processed and mailed to you. Afterwards you can send me the confirmation. Thanks
Comment: I immediately thought this was a scam. The English was not native. What also made me suspicious is the absence of a return address.
People who have nothing to hide and have serious intentions of renting normally provide full details.
