These con artists called and left me a message this morning that they were the IRS and they were taking us to court and suing us. Last chance for me to pay them, all said in a very grim sounding tone of voice. Whatever. We always pay our taxes on time and have never received a phone call or anything through the mail, so I knew this was a scam. A rather old one, at that. The number that called was 721-593-6564 but the message said to call 202-239-1679 (supposedly a Washington D.C. area code) to take care of this matter. Thank goodness I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. However, it disturbs me that they call all these innocent people (many elderly) with an ominous sounding message from the (supposedly) IRS. People in America are scared to death of the IRS, which makes this scam possible in the first place. It's sad and at the same time, it's scary. The IRS website says that these con artists have swindled and cheated more than $14,000,000.00 from at least 3,000 victims since October of 2013. So, IMHO this is no little scam. I don't understand why these people cannot be stopped. The best I can hope for is that Karma or The Feds will eventually get them.
Had a call flashing on my home phone stating that they were the IRS, this was the final notice to contact them, and that they are suing me. Said to call 202 239-1679. Well, I am NOT stupid and suspected a fraud as I've never had a problem with IRS or taxes. I looked this number up, found this website and wanted to let folks that these lowlifes are trying to get folks scammed in Georgia. Shame on them. I hope the Feds can catch these awful people!
First of all...I just crossed the seventieth year in this life last December..so I might be one of the elderly that these idiots call......The Caller ID showed up as Massachusetts...413-080-5567 advising this is the IRS final notice before a lawsuit and to call 203-239-1697 to have the problem straightened out....
I just got the same voicemail. Came from the 732 # and told me to call 202–239-1679. I have actually been waiting for some correspondence from the IRS and so I, stupidly, returned the call. A man with a strong accent answered and I was immediately suspicious and asked if I was calling the IRS and he just kept saying over and over again "who is this[?]" instead of answering my question. Finally, I hung up. I tried calling that 800-number that an earlier poster provided to report this, as it seems to be a very serious case of misrepresentation, however I got a busy signal. I would love to know where to report this such that someone might take it seriously
