I just got a call from 202-241-0329. The voicemail message was from a person with a thick Indian accent claiming to be the IRS and they are issuing an investigation against me, and it is extremely important to call them back today.
Watch out people this is a scam!

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). Someone called claiming to be with the IRS investigating us.  Left a message to call them back immediately

I got a call today from 202-241-0329 (Washington, DC on the caller ID) and the same Pakistani or Indian voice message described in the previous posts urged me to call back.  It's obviously a scam.  But, what do they want me to do?  What information do they want?  What will they do with it?  How does the scam work?  A curious person, like me, would like to know, but this time not enough to actually call them and play along to see what they're doing.  Too bad someone doesn't  develop an App that can be dialed into their electronics through their IP causing their printer to squirt out all the ink.  Or better yet an App that can reverse flow a strong electric pulse into any device that makes more than three calls to a number on the Do Not Call List.  Why not stimulate the economy by manufacturing and deploying mini-drones that link to a similar App and then just bomb them where they sit?  On second thought, never mind.  They'd probably use it on extremist blog posters.

This is not a legitimate call from the IRS.

Since this individual is impersonating the IRS you should also report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). You can send an email to [email protected] or file an online complaint by completing their "Online Form" located on their website, http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml

Please visit our "Report Phishing" website (http://www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing) and click on "Complaint Assistant". This will allow you to file a complaint with the FTC and identify the complaint as an IRS complaint.

Alternatively you can file a complaint directly with the FTC by visiting http://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

Whether you use the IRS link or file the complaint directly with the FTC, add "IRS Hostile Call" in the Comments section of the complaint.

Individuals who have been victimized by this scam and have provided one or more Green Dot MoneyPak numbers to the scammer should also notify Green Dot directly at 800-473-3636 to report the scam and open an investigation.
