There is a fairly common IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers in both Canada and the USA.
USA tax payers should read this:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Tax-Scams-Consumer-Alerts
Note particularly the links at that site, warning of the scam!
I got a similar call an hour ago from a woman speaking in a grave "life-or-death" tone with a fake American accent who went a bit about my owing back taxes to I.R.S. I asked her if she knew who she was speaking to. She seemed unsure so I told her I was India's next Prime Minister! So she hung up!!
BTW, I also received a similar scam call last week from 202-864-1148, another Washington D.C. number, when the [***]-hole left a message saying he was officer such-and-such from crime investigation department and was calling about some criminal issues. He asked me to return his call and also said I should not record the phone call! I tried unsuccessfully to return the call several times when there is a pause at the other end and then nobody answers.
I have blocked both these numbers on my Panasonic phone. So let's see if they try again from a third number.
As they say, suckers are born every fraction of a second, so don't be recognized as one of them!!!
Correction - the senior officer's name given was Danny Morrison.
Thanks for the info from this website; let's put these criminals to rest.
Note: Legitimate business would contact you via correspondence, not phone calls. Always ask questions and never make any payments over the phone.
Got a machine voice message that I have some IRS issues and they wanted me to call back to 202-241-0617. Immediately I found this site and I can see it is a scam. Thank you!
I am so glad I learned that if I googled the number, this site shows up. I received the call on 5/1, some voice mesage to say there would be a grave consequence if I don't call back. Then on 5/3, the guy with an accent left me a message again, this time he knows my name. We'll see he will call back again today.
These IRS impersonators called me back. Told them you were fraud. They said they were not but I hung up. After that, I called Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration that is IRS's web page to report scam/fraud. They said this number (202-241-0617) was a scam.
