Today I received a call (which I ignored) that resulted in voice message stating that a case had been filed against me on my name and SSN. And demanded that I do not ignore the message and call back the number with my lawyer! The caller did not provide any specifics about for what the case is and he did not even state my name. How are these people getting phone numbers? Do they just pick a random number and call?
I received the same today at home and then I called the number after the message was left on my answering machine, it is an Indian accent as it appears and he was talking about IRS and international transactions not reported and he didn't provide any information when I asked him to provide which transaction, what is the date of it, and to where or from where the transaction was, he was just threatening and said that if he tells me the details then I can use the information against them (them? who?). It is a spam and the police, IRS and FBI should track this number.
This guy called me today and yesterday, 3 times in total, leaving the same message as yours. when i answered the call when he called me for the 3rd time, he just hung up. so, that clearly tells me that he is a mother f***ing scammer. don't worry about it. but dont call him back, your money can run away from you and go to him.
No. It is not random. These people are predators who buy personal information from a lot of sources. They have all your personal and financial data and will use that data to try to scare you into giving them money. Originates in India and has been around for awhile.
It's stupid, really, their strong Indian accent and lack of knowledge of correct legal terminology and US law enforcement practices should give them away as total scammers, but enough people are falling for their lies to keep them in business.
I've received the same message on my answering machine three times now. The latest was today 7-30-14 at about 4:30 pm in California. The 202 area code is Washington D.C., according to my phone book. I looked up Officer Craig Miller (the name claimed on the phone call) on the internet -- The name was that of a hero who died saving lives on 9-11. Awful that a scammer would desecrate his name. I haven't returned the call and don't intend to.
