(626)429-2451 (8/10/16) received call on a number that we don't use, but was listening to messages to clear out and cancel phone line. Message indicated that the caller (robo caller) was informing me that the IRS has filed a lawsuit against me and to get my case number I need to call this number back. This is not how the IRS operates. First you receive a letter with the details and case number included. You have up to 90 days to respond to the inquiry with either a payment or your objection (in writing) to the demand for payment. If you are not able to make full payment the IRS will allow you to file a payment plan, prior to the 90 day period. The best action to take if you actually receive a formal letter is contact the IRS at their 800 number for individual returns: (800) 829-1040 or their business line (800) 829-4933.
However, the IRS would rather you attempt to resolve your issue by visiting their website and file payment plans and get answers to other questions on line. The IRS had a major reduction in staff last year (10/2015) and they don't make calls unless the outstanding tax liability is over $ 10,000 and the person has not started some sort of counter action. You will always be contacted by mail first.
