Got a call from 1-202-241-4886 number from an "officer John Smith" with a foreign accent. He said that I "underpaid" my taxes and he was just about to sign off on the warrant for my arrest. He asked if I want to settle it out of the court and pay $1800. While he was talking, I googled this number and found that it was a scam. Thanks to other posts(!!) I was able to go from the state of terrifying shock to telling him everything that I thought about this "officer John Smith".
The same happened to us. Got a call from 202-241-4886 and were threatened by "John White" to be arrested and foreclosed our primary residence for "underpaid" taxes!? What a bunch of b###t! We always pay what we have to. But with this call were caught unguarded. Never talked or had any relationship with IRS before so didn't know how to react on this "officer". This Indian scammer gave us a very hard time and cost a lot of nerves. Thanks God we didn't pay anything! Unfortunately we started thinking clearly about that call only after the telephone was hanged up.
Hope very much that one day the justice will win and even if they are located in India they will be caught! Thank you everyone for the posts!!!
We received a voicemail from "John Smith from the IRS" as well. I even regret he didn't reach me because I have so much to tell him by now, but I'm not going to call back.
A message was left on my answering machine. Caller identified himself as an IRS tax crime investigator and we always pay our taxes on time. Also, you get a letter from IRS not a phone call. I googled the number, and sure enough it was a SCAM! I'm glad I did not call back! YACK!
