Confirmed fraud attempt (IRS script). This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines but not by calling them back directly (the number may be spoofed and repeat calls by you may - under exceptional circumstances- amount to harassment). The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and/or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). This is not a legitimate call from the IRS.

Please see the following press releases:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterate ... -Telephone-Scam

Since this individual is impersonating the IRS you should also report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). You can send an email to [email protected] or file an online complaint by completing their "Online Form" located on their website, http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml

Please visit our "Report Phishing" website (http://www.irs.gov/uac/Report-Phishing) and click on "Complaint Assistant". This will allow you to file a complaint with the FTC and identify the complaint as an IRS complaint.

Alternatively you can file a complaint directly with the FTC by visiting http://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

Whether you use the IRS link or file the complaint directly with the FTC, add "IRS Hostile Call" in the Comments section of the complaint.

Individuals who have been victimized by this scam and have provided one or more Green Dot MoneyPak numbers to the scammer should also notify Green Dot directly at 800-473-3636 to report the scam and open an investigation.

I got a phone call from the number: (202) 241-7096 from a very fast-talking Indian lady who claims to be from the IRS. She claims that I had some miscalculations in my tax returns and that they have issued a Warrant with my local Police Department (red flag - we have none of those).

They were nice enough to offer me a single option: pay them the $1,298 I "owe" or I will get arrested. They wanted it either in cash or bank transfer and wanted me to stay connected with them as I drive to my bank (which I told them was an hour away).  Little did they know that I personally know the Sheriff (who happens to be a friend of mine because we used to work for the same Sheriff's Department) and he verified that it was a scam.

Received a voice mail from IRS in Chinese accent, demanding I return the call. I called the number back and the phone was answered by someone with Middle Eastern or Pakistani or Indian accent. The guy was difficult to understand because of background noise and his accent.

He claimed crime in my joint tax returns of my (just divorced) husband and I, plus my imminent arrest with solitary confinement for 10 years (what !!). I heard Muslim prayer calls in the background. Plus sounds of vehicle horns and people talking in some foreign language. I hung up. I am glad I googled the number and found this site with helpful information. Thank you RexIRS.
