Received automated call saying it was google trying to secure my account from a hack. Left a code for me to use. However, I checked and there was no attempt by google to advise me of the hack.
I agree. I do thinthis is a scam, because all I have done in the last week that has anything to do with Google, is search the web. I got about six messages from Google saying 'This is your verification code' and then later on in the day, I got a voicemail from 202-455-8888. I did not listen to it, and if it was just asking me to enter the verication code, I haven't done anything on Google that requires a verication code...
I have a ad on craigslist. A guy text me from a 215 phone number which is local saying he was going to call me in a minute. I got a call from 202 455 8888 and didn't answer it called again I answered and it asked for 2 digit code. I hung up quick cause I didn't want my phone hacked. I text the guy back at 215 number and told him he's a scammer. That is a scam to hijack your phone.
So the obvious answer is that someone is trying to hack your account, but since Google uses a secure verification method, the hackers weren't able to gain access. That doesn't mean this number is not a legit Google number. It just means you are receiving it due to another person attempting to gain access. I'd be a lot more effing worried about that than if the reported phone number is really Google or not.
You are correct. This call from Google was to assist me in re-setting my Google account pasword. They provided me with a 6 number Code that enabled me to re-set.
