IRS will always write. IRS never calls. Above all IRS will never threaten you, IRS will never make an offer to settle your case over phone. Whatever IRS does, it will be in writing, and you will get a chance to contest or appeal your case with facts.
IRS has enormous resources and it will find your correct current mailing address if it needs to reach you.
If someone's calls and threatens you over phone with an arrest or big fines or punishment, it is a scam. That is not how our American justice system works. Don't fall for scams. Scams support criminal, terrorist groups.
Here's the voicemail I received as transcribed by Comcast:
"This message is intended for {my name} the very second you receive this message I need you or your region attorney off record to return the call. Issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My name is John Davis from investigation Bureau Department of {unintelligible} and hotline to my division is 2025069166. I repeat it's 2025069166 {unintelligible} or disregard this message and do return the call as soon as possible before any legal litigation take place. Anyhow {unintelligible} that it's an efficiency in your income tax so goodbye and take care."
As others mentioned, it is a man with a heavy Indian accent.
I have so many questions:
• How come John Davis sounds like Apu from the Simpsons?
• Why do none of the words John Davis uses make any sense when used together?
• Will the efficiency in our income tax be used for good and not for evil?
• If I don't respond the very second I get the message, will everything be destroyed?
• Is there a type of litigation that is illegal?
I'm kidding. This is totally scammy and I feel sorry for anyone who falls for it.
