I just got the second such call. A month and a half ago, "Agent David Cooper" left me a message. It was believable, and I called him back. But I got an answering machine that sounded like it was in an echo chamber. I called my CPA, and his assistant says the IRS always writes to you. I was relieved that I hadn't given any information. I got another call this morning from "Officer Karen Baker." It was a mechanical, flat voice, speaking slowly, like a robot (which of course it was). She told me to call back "before we take any legal allegations against you." Well, that is wrong wording, so her credibility slipped even further. And she signed off by saying, "Thank you, and take care." Now, really...
Just received an automated call from Officer Kathy Baker at the IRS at number 202-506-9240 telling me to call or have my attorney call to avoid any legal "allegations" against me. I treat ALL calls with suspicion so I researched online prior to taking any action. What a bunch of imbeciles these people are!!
