Received a call telling me I had won a grant in the amount of $7,000.00 USD, was provided a confirmation number and a call back number (202-580-8232). I knew going in this was a scam, but called the number anyway just to see what would transpire. The man who answered the phone verified the confirmation number and told me that to receive the grant, I would have to pay a $250 security deposit to reserve the funds in my name at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. I then began asking him pointed questions, about how he received my information and whether he also had my SSN. He stated that he received my information from his "Verifications Officer," and that he didn't have my SSN. I then asked who he REALLY worked for, his name, company name, and address. He got defensive, wanting to know why I needed all this information. I informed him that I thought it was a scam, and that I needed to verify he was who he said he was to prove it wasn't a scam. He got really upset, started trying to talk over me, began using swear words, and again reiterated that all I had to do was send the deposit. I should also mention that both of these men had very heavy accents. I finally pissed him off enough to wrangle the following information from him:

He told me his name was John Berry, and I told him I knew that wasn't his name. Finally, I told him that I would verify the information he gave and call him back. When I hung up the phone, I called and raised a complaint with the FTC. Their information is as follows:

If you receive these calls, please get as much information as you can (without providing ANY of yours), and then report them. If enough people do this, then maybe these people can be stopped for good.
I just hand up my phone after talking with someone who gave me the same name John Berry. He has heavy Indian accent and I did not believe the word he said. Thanks for info where to report this guy.
