Take it one step farther. Robo callers hang up on 4 or less rings 99% of the time. Set your voicemail to pick up on 5 rings. This works automatically and you don't have to be home to manually pull the plug. Since your machine didn't connect, your # has not been validated as working.
I answer the phone and talk in a different language, which they do not understand. I enjoy making them frustrated. They got a live person but they see they are unable to get their commission. How sad.... Have fun for free.
Sure you could speak in a foreign language but it would be your luck that the person on the other end can speak it as well. Just don't answer if you don't know the number. I hate hearing the phone ring but by not answering the unknown numbers, the calls have come few and far in between.
I never answer the phone when I don't recognize the number , especially out of state calls. If they don't leave a message when it goes to our answering machine, then I know it is a telemarketer or some kind of scammer. Maybe if enough people did this, the calls will stop.
If you stopped using your VM or answering machine, they would stop a lot sooner. To answer in any manner tells them you have a "live" working number. Just use Caller ID. Let it ring. No answer will really discourage them. They'll think its a back-up or rollover line on someone's business phone system.
