LINDA
I got a call from 205-205-1111 today at 1:03 pm EST.  I did not pick-up, as I did not recognize the number or the area code, so I let the answering machine answer, but no message was left on my answering machine.

I checked this site and sure enough, it was reported by others.

This is one of many, many similar calls that I get every week, but I never answer a call from a number i do not know.

My policy is that if I do not know the number of or caller's name (which rarely appears), that they will leave a message if it is a legitimate call, and I will then return the call, if it is someone I know that left the message.

Otherwise, I ignore it, but it is soooooo annoying to get these meaningless calls.............

Are they calling your landline or cell?

If it's a landline, you might want to consider getting a call blocker.  You can find them at Walmart, Best Buy, etc.  They cost around $50-60, and can be programmed to block any number you don't want to hear from.  Alternately, your phone company may offer a free or low-cost service that allows you to block specified numbers and/or Private/no CID calls.

If you have a smartphone, there are a number of call-blocking apps for iPhone and Android, and many are free.  Two of my favorites are YouMail and Mr. Number, but there are others to choose from.  If you have just a standard phone (or "dumbphone", as they're sometimes called), you should be able to create a contact list that you can label "scam" or "unwanted", and set your ringer to silent for any number in the list.  Then you can just add numbers to the list as you go along.  Chances are the numbers will change from time to time, as many scammers use Caller ID spoofing (meaning they can program any arbitrary number to pop up on your CID, even if it's not their actual number).  Believe me, I've been there, and still am to an extent, and I've learned a lot more about the world of phone scammers than I ever wanted to know.  Stay vigilant and make the best of the information on this website.  You're among friends here!  :-)

In regard to cellular apps, I used Mr Number with my last phone and found it very useful. I initially got the app after I received a couple of calls from what I believe was South America.

Mr. Number is nice because you can flag a number in their database and see who else has flagged it as spam.  YouMail is an app you can use to replace your existing voice mail service, and you can designate unique greetings for different numbers.  There are a number of pre-recorded greetings that come free with the app, and some are pretty funny.  My personal favorite is the "Mental Health Hotline".

Talking about free voice mail service of some kind back in the 90's that assigned you a number. For the life of me I cannot recall the name it.
