This is clearly a spoofed call. I think that what they do is to try one number, which is usually an out-of-state number, and if there is no contact made using that number, they will simply try another number which is in your area code. It will, more than likely, show up as UNKNOWN NAME on your caller ID. You should NEVER answer any call that appears with Unknown Name. And certainly you should always be very leery of any call from an out of state number that you do not recognize. Many scammers will use various false names to trick you into thinking they are legitimate, but, of course, they are not. There are several main scams ranging from alarm systems to free cruises, with everything else they can possibly come up with to try and trick the public into giving them information they can use to steal from you. Please note: The DO NOT CALL registry only works to protect consumers from calls from legitimate businesses. This does not apply to scammers; they are in no wise concerned about your being on the DO NOT CALL list. Since they are crooks and criminals these individuals operate by totally unscrupulous and illegal methods. NEVER ANSWER A CALL FROM NUMBERS YOU DO NOT RECOGNIZE--PERIOD.
I have gotten to the point that I no longer even use a telephone answering machine. Since I have Caller ID, I check to see if I have received any calls while I was out, and if I do, and it is someone I know, I will simply call them back. Never think that simply because a call is from your area code that it is legitimate. These are more often than not spoofed calls. Report all such calls to the appropriate authorities or businesses whose names are being falsely spoofed. Recently I received some eight to ten calls, in a matter of hours, from a number appearing on my Caller ID as my local cable company. I contacted them--which may take some effort, since they have devised every way possible to avoid letting you speak to a human being--but, nevertheless, you should do so.
