This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
I know about these guys, except that I called him back everytime he called. Told him what a scam he was and that he could go straight to hell. If he wanted to serve me to come and bring it. His reply was (and he left this on my answeing machine) that he was going to kill me. I thanked him for leaving messages like that on my answering machine. I turned it over to my local police department. They are handling it. The Area Code 205 is in Birmingham Alabama.
this number called my phone..i saved the voicemail...saying i was goin to jail for fraud on a payday loan had all my info....i had to go look at my bank account to see if i recieved a payday loan..before christmas i had applied several places for a payday loan but decided against it...i was checking the bank thinking maybe somehow they had deposited the money without me knowing...not....so i called it back and a foreign sounding man answered and said it was for a payday loan taken out in 2012..he did have all my information and said it was for 325 dollars..i hung up ..several days later they called my daughters phone asking for me this time it was for 300 dollars could not give me an exact date yadayada yada...i taped the phone call and am calling the police right now
I also have been getting these calls, I have let them know that I have filed reports with the FBI (this is a known issue) they disconnect the call when I note the FBI however they still keep calling, frustrating. I have let my office know about this and said to keep forwarding to me so I can file a report each time, thankfully I work for a company that is very understanding and supportive.
