Don't answer if you get a call from 206-414-0244, it's an IRS scam
The caller left me a voicemail claiming that he was Officer John Wright (sp?) from the IRS, that there was a warrant out for my arrest and that my house was under federal investigation. The IRS website says that if there are any issues, they will send a letter, they will not call you.

This is a Pakistan or India based IRS scam. Do not fall for it. The IRS does not initiate any legal action via phone.
Read http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm

As general background information, here are a few things you can do:
1) Report it to TIGTA under http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml especially if you have become a victim (lost money, gave personal information etc.). You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint (include “IRS Telephone Scam" in your complaint). This way you can also help the government establish specific fraud patterns.

2) Help kill their phone lines. The scammers use Voice over IP lines (e.g. magicJack (Ymax corporation)) to make it seem as if they are calling from the US. This is always against these companys' terms of service and can lead to immediate termination of their contract and blocking of their IP addresses for future attempts to register. Do a reverse look up of their telephone number (e.g. www.whitepages.com) to identify the Voice over IP provider and report it to the company and or law enforcement (local police and/or state attorney general)

3) If you are really annoyed: call or write to your representative in Congress. As these scams happen all over the country maybe this will trigger a reaction and provide US law enforcement agencies with the political backing and the resources they need to work in India and Pakistan together with local authorities (it can happen, read: http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/ex-call-cen ... mmission-320427). A US task force has already been set up in Jamaica to nab scammers there (see http://www.ice.gov/doclib/news/library/reports/cornerstone/cornerstone7-1.pdf). You can use the following template for your letter (more powerful!) or email:

This number was the first of these scam calls we have received...that one was last week -  tonight another from an 844-332-5143.  the first one was absolutely horrible with all manner of threats of jail - in minute detail of how the officers would arrive with handcuffs...blah blah blah...i was told i was being recorded and in a conference call with IRS and Homeland Security on the line and if I didn't go to the bank with my credit card and withdraw 500$ within the hour to make an initial payment all hell would descend upon my life.  i was also told i was forbidden to speak to my husband or any family members to ask for assitance as that wold be construed as my making a conspiracy against the US government....and on and on and on.... I am not what I would call a gullible person nor am I by any means naieve - however, even tho I had a strong suspicion this was a scam call, it was just convincing enough for me to be rather shook up by it.  Finally when it got very mean and threatening, I jsut started asking bizarre and ridiculous questions to waste their time....they finally hung up on me.  It was awful and I shudder to consider some elderly or truly innocent person getting this type of intrusion and upset.  I do SO hope these guys get their just desserts!  thanks everyone for taking the time to post your experience...it sure helps!  even when you know it's a scam - it's good to have some reinforcement!

Received a telephone message today from officer John White/Wright (?). Could only understand part of the message "Investigation", "Warrant against...", "206-414-0244",....

Thank you to others for posting the fraud explanation, so I do not have to worry.
