Same as others, sometimes I mess with them and keep them busy as long as possible and others I just tell them I do not even have a computer, they are simply scam fools.
I just received a call from Direct Assist... 1-831-555-0166... Same thing... India type person.. saying I had errors on my computer that needed fixed!! Wanted me to pay for help. I told them .. no thanks.
Last night when I shut down my home and my work computers (both windows 7) my home computer went through a upload series that seemed like normal from microsoft. This morning I got a call from 1-260-555-0114. The caller ID said it was Dir Assist. The guy with a heavy Indian accent ask for me by name. I never confirmed but he went into his speil about being from the Windows Help Desk and that my ISP was sending error messages. He asked me if I was by my computer so that he could check. I told him that I was by my computer and that it was not giving my any trouble and he hung up.. Of course I knew it was a scam but now I'm wondering how he got my name in the first place. I plan to keep my wifi off on that computer and do a scan before I get on the internet but like you I am now wondering whether last night's upgrade was really an activation of some kind.
I got a call at 6:00am it was a lady with a very thick Asian accent, saying my business computers had a virus! I could hardy understand her, so I told her that I would contact my company regarding this issue and that i would call them back..
NO, I did not call them back! my computers were just fine.
This number is calling saying they are getting alarms that my computer has gotten infected with dangerous malware. I need to turn my computer on and follow their steps exactly. Two calls in two days. They say they are from Windows and are here to help. When I asked where they were located they said Forest lakes, NY but they are obviously an India based call center.
Caller ID said Seattle, Microsoft, obviously Indian, You did a better job of understanding his accent that I could manage. This is the second call in the last 3 months. It's hang-up time!
