We received calls from this number. They are calling on behalf of our credit union, about materials being mailed to us about a charter change from credit union to a bank. I got 2 calls from this number (1 missed call, 1 call I picked up) and my wife received one call (hit voicemail, with the same content as the call I answered).

This call is legitimate.

I got a message left from this number today:

"Hello Robert, this is Omar. I'm calling on behalf of Technology Credit Union regarding some materials being mailed to you which describe the proposed charter change to a mutual savings bank. You'll be receiving three sets of these disclosure materials, approximately one every 30 days beginning mid-June. The final packet will include your ballot to vote on the charter change. Your board of directors unanimously recommend that you support this change so please read and review the disclosure materials. Should you have any questions, please call 800-553-0880. Thanks for your support. Good day."

The 800 number is Technology Credit Union's member contact center. What's strange is that the call is coming from New York City, which is nowhere near California-based TechCU

I'm very suspicious of this charter change, which seems to have no benefit for individual members of the credit union like myself. The fact that TechCU has apparently hired a New York City company to help them with this change makes me more suspicious that this change is motivated by someone else's self-interest.

yup- after reviewing the documents sent, I found that it is beneficial to the DIRECTORS of the board and NOT to the members- ie us! 1) the way they are mailing us stuff and not emailing us is weird and they have not set up a forum board for all members to honestly discuss- everything smacks of fraud. (They even have a line or two that says that if you want your comments to be read by other members, you need to PAY for it- huh?!)
2) Once they become a "bank" from a credit union, they will have the power to make riskier loans (and we, as a country are yet to return from the "risky" behaviors of "banks") but the way they have "worded" it is that they are increasing lending to commercial property.
3) The primary reason we banked so many years with a Credit Union was because that it was small and secure. The reason why we still have money left in our accounts after the mess of 2008 was because it was a Credit Union. And now they want to do away with it- does not make sense.
4) If you look at the last page of the Notice of a proposal.. it has an Appendix that shows the "effects of the charter change on ATM use. Duh- Banks are more than ATM machines. If they are trying to pull the wool on us this one Appendix proves that their intent is in question and should be seriously reviewed.
5) Can we use this platform already created and reach out to the 72,000 plus members who have received this information and vote NO? Can we branch out to our acebook/ social media to stop this charter change?

Technology Credit is happy and eager to answer any questions our members might have about the charter change proposal.  Please feel free to call us at 800-553-0880.

Tech CU hired an outside telemarketer to help us alert all of our members about the upcoming materials they would be receiving.

Sincerely,

Lisa Fettner
