got a call at 10:15 am ,answering machine picked up, left no message
caller id said California call.
there are prison calling centers and I think this is one of them ,
be careful what info you give out, they're stealing peoples id's to get cell pones and
credit cards from within prisons. the govt shouldn't allow them to have felons making telemarketing calls ,but they do. this was on 20/20
The reason people call even though you are on the DNC list is that they are gambling that nobody will report it to the FCC/FTC. They also use disposable cell phones, making it difficult to trace. These are bottom feeders and scam artists. Much like the losers to offer to lower your credit card interest rate. I was told by someone at the FCC to NOT ANSWER the calls. The more you answer, the more they will call and put you on a list of people who answer the phone.
I think what the felons are doing is taking advantage of the program, which tries to get people to accept payment for an inmate's calls by telling them that it might be a friend or a relative who has been incarcerated and is trying to reach them, so they feel obligated to open the account. The way the scam works is that the felon doesn't give their name when prompted so the account holder doesn't know who's calling. The felon then enters their number when calling their friends, so the call gets charged to their phone. The account holder gets a call with no-one at the other end (maybe to verify that the number is still in service?) and ends up with $35.00-$50.00 charges on their bill.
