The is a criminal scam. They wanted information from me as they are the "IRS" were going to take me to court for $7,900. I Wanting to find out and record the message, I played along. I now wonder if I went to far, they needed me to verify 4 digits of SS. I Wanted to get more info out of them so I provided. I then learned that they already had my address and middle initial . ...I was then past on to 2nd person, and wasted her time until hung she hung up.
Any thoughts on my providing the last 4 of SS and them already having my address & middle initial?? .....Anyone???
These jerks (who I have received calls from as well) may have a hacker/insider who may be able to collect ssn# thru any number of ways, from department stores to stolen mail, to even ppl working in civil service. They pick on the elderly and also use scare tactics (what is scarier than the IRS)?Very disturbing. As far as linking your phone number with your name/address, I think there are paid sites that provide that info pretty readily. If you are worried you can tell your bank and the 3 credit bureaus to be on alert and they will help secure you and monitor your credit activity for suspicious activity. *** I think I would do that if I were you. ****Even though I get what you were trying to do- Don't give out any info in the future-report the suspicious calls.
Auto-message left message stating "This is the IRS. The reason for this call is to advise you that the IRS has filed a lawsuit against you. To learn more about this lawsuit, call..." and the above number.
The IRS reminds people that they can know pretty easily when a supposed IRS caller is a fake. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a tell-tale sign of a scam. The IRS will never:
Call to demand immediate payment, nor will we call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill..
Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
