Yeah, these morons keep calling our house, despite the fact that i have told them to stop now seven times. They are simply a testing service and have gotten access to our students database information, probably through ACT registration.
Someone from this number called saying that he was "helping" with my son's SAT test this year...Apparently, when my son took the PSAT, he indicated that he would be interested in receiving study materials to help prepare for the SAT. (checked a box or something - at least that's what the gentleman said...) This gentleman informed us that he was sending/had already sent the materials, which were on CD-ROM this year, and that they would be arriving soon.
He made it sound like he was from the official SAT organization, and never mentioned there was any cost involved UNTIL I asked him if this would cost us anything, at which point he "mentioned" that yes, if we kept the materials more than 30 days, there would be a charge of $100-something (I don't remember the exact amount). When I jumped him and told him to immediately cancel that shipment and that we would NOT be paying for any materials, we were "mysteriously" disconnected. Attempts to call the number back myself, to confirm that the shipment was indeed cancelled, get only a busy signal...
Nearly the same thing here... This lady presented her the same way (working with my child, she checked a box, etc) only she told me it was 14 days to study the materials and that it was only after I asked that she said it was $129 for the "student discount". (Who else would need this?) She said that the amount would be completely refunded as long as we returned the CD/materials within the 14 days.
I told her I would have to discuss this with my husband before charging something like that and she said that I could go to their site (because they were behind on their phone calls) but I would have to pay $299 retail for it. Several times they mentioned collegeboard.com (a legit site) but when I mentioned going to their site, she said they were actually at a DIFFERENT site and just as she was about to give me that web address we were mysteriously disconnected. LOL!
ALWAYS ASK FOR A NUMBER TO CONTACT THEM BACK TO MAKE THE SALE!
Never give your card numbers to someone who calls you, even if they are a company you recognize.
Same information as prior. They request $129.00 for a 30 day free look. They called me at work and had even had my home address. Pretty good scam, like to know how AZ School's released this info.
I also got a similar number. I didn't pick it up because I didn't recognize the area code and wasn't aware of what it was so I decided to let it ring. It did not appear to be a business by the phone number it was because it appears to be someone's home phone number. I wouldn't be surprised if this was what they were calling about and they are trying to rip people off I am sure. I will not call them back but will wait and see if they call again. If they do, I will just pick up the phone and tell them I'm not interested.
We received a call from this number today. My husband answered it and passed it on to me saying it was someone from our daughter's school. The gentleman, Mr. Stevens said he was our daughter's SAT/ACT Advisor - he used her nickname, not her given name, which really made me think it was legitimate. It did not feel like high pressure sales. He gave me a lot of info about test dates, which tests she should take, etc. And asked me questions about the schools she wants to attend, etc. He was well-spoken and seemed educated. I was told a credit card number was needed in case we did not return the materials in the specified time (14 days with the option of a 30 day extension). Like an idiot, I gave it to him. He assured me it was a "conditional" charge and wouldn't appear on my account until 14 days after the materials were received. It appeared on my account within a couple of hours. I called my bank, had to cancel my card, but they are taking care of it - thank goodness! I have NEVER given my card number out like that before and I don't know what possessed me to do it today.
