They called and said they were from my Canadian bank and that my VISA card had been used for a $300 eBay purchase and an $1100 western union transfer. I could barely hear them because of static and thick accents. They asked me to go to my computer and press the Windows key, which was super suspicious. When I asked whether they could confirm that they were from my bank, they gave me a long scare tactic about how the RCMP has been notified and fraud is very serious and we don't want to alert the fraudster. They could only give me the first four digits of my card number, which is common knowledge for each bank. I found this very suspicious and they hung up on me.
Indian scammers using a fake number in Florida, and using Anglo names that scare people into believing that there were two unauthorized purchases: $300 on eBay and $1,100 on Western Union India. Scammers state that they were able to cancel the eBay transaction but not the Western Union India one and claim that they can refund you $2,000 (which comes out of you're own bank account if you give you're debit or credit card info - DON'T DO IT), where you need to pay Western Union back $900. They may either ask for you're banking info on the phone or through RAT (remote assistance tools) software which makes these Indian scammers to take full control of you're computer. If you proceed with this first step of the scam, the following day they will report that the RCMP is needs you're help by again sending $6,000 of cash from a deposit from the RCMP themself and will even pay you $300 upon doing so. In reality, they just take a line of credit out of you're account if they still have access to you're bank details. Why do I know so about this? I know of people who fell for this scam and told me all the details. REMEMBER: you're bank will NEVER call you about situations like this unless you alert them first and that the callet ID will ALWAYS be you're bank's name, NOT an unknown caller.
Same call still happening from the same number 12395748866. Same scam, said there were two unauthorized purchases: $300 on eBay and $1,000 on Western Union. Said they were calling from visa security. Funny enough I am in the banking industry so right away my red flags went up so I played along. Their first mistake was saying my Visa was used. LOL my Visa is with the company I work for so I know their Visa fraud procedures and if they called their name would be in the call display and would be calling from Canada, not Florida. Anyways they claimed the Visa was from another Canadian FI (which I will not name), that FI I do have but it is a MC not Visa. So then I asked him what number is the Visa. He says it is the one that starts with 4519. That is the 3rd mistake they made. He should have said the card which ends in 4519 not starts. Why? All FI's use the first 4 digits as their FI identifier. Example: all Royal Bank credit cards may start with 5476. So all their clients start with this number. Out of curiosity I looked at my cards and none of them started with these digits. I said you sure, none of my cards start with that number, (this is the 4th mistake) he says you sure this is your (FI name) visa. He changed the name of the FI which he claimed he was originally calling on. I said nope, no number starting with 4519 and then he hung up. He knew I was on to him.
Follow my tips above and this will always help stop scammers. This is a classic phishing call. Thee try to scare you and then ask questions, then at some point in time they will try to ask for payment. Never pay.
