There is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

Said we needed to call some number with same area code stating they were the IRS and we were in trouble. Digitalized voice and since the number didn't look "offical" I just hung up.
The call arrived Friday, January 9, 2015 at 1:52 pm.
I did not recognize the number, so I let it go to voice-mail. The ID was "Maryland" and the phone number. It was a slurred digitalized female voice, speaking fast, with a serious important tone of voice, throughout the message. It said:
"The very second you receive this message, You need to call us back, on the IRS Hotline at 240-547-2006.
I Repeat 240-547-2006.
It is very time sensitive; so, before the IRS takes any Legal Action against your name; call the IRS as soon as possible."
I got the exact same message. I called back and a man answered. He wanted to speak to my husband - called him by name. I know he got it off the caller ID because he wouldn't give me any information. Since we are married and file a joint return, wouldn't I be in as much trouble as my husband?? I told him that it is bullsh*t, that this is fraud. He said, "Um, Hum," and hung up.
Exact same thing. Wow! What a load of $#!+ Wonder if they do this to cell#'s too. This was a landline they called today.
