I nearly fell for this scam. They said my computer was about to crash cause of viruses ext I did let them y2k control of computer and they wanted $200 from me but would reduce it as being disabled so it would cost $50 . I took advice from friends google n others they all warned me don't pay. I left comp on while out benefit no still had viruses Tec on it and within space of 15 mins had 25 phone calls from them in end lost temper with them told them block my up address don't care u not getting a penny from me n hung up. Rang me several more times didn't answer it. PLEASE ALL DON'T FALL FOR IT LIKE I VERY NEARLY DID
I recieved a call saying that i one a gift card. They had all my info, but said i needed to pay $1.95 for shippng. Is this a scam, and how do they get all ur info.
I just got the call on my cell. Didn't answer it because one I don't answer calls from numbers I don't know and two it is an overseas number and I don't know anyone overseas. If y'all will notice there aren't enough numbers for it to be from the US or Canada and the number had a + in front of it which is a dead give away. I have heard about these calls from overseas being huge scams and it costing people a lot of money. Never EVER give out your personal information and especially don't give out banking information or credit card numbers.
I got a call from this number today... ... ..."Windows Assistance Company"... ... ...I have had this call, in various different guises, from different numbers many times before. They tell you that you have problems with your computer; due to "malicious software downloaded without your permissions, while you are surfing the internet" They ask you to open the 'event viewer', which will end up showing you that there are lots; hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of 'Errors' and 'Warnings' on your computer... ... ... ... ... ... ...
I am a computer engineering student at masters level and so have insight into how computers work... ... ...What actually happens is that each time your computer boots up, or you start a program, the computer has to go through hundreds and thousands of calculations... ... ...now depending on what software, and hardware, you have sometimes it can make mistakes. ie It will try to access something that it not ready to be accessed yet, or it will try to find a particular file which is being temporarily blocked, while some other process is being performed. In the end it will sort it's self out and the hardware will operate correctly, or the software will run... ... ... ... ...
THESE 'WARNINGS' & 'ERRORS' ARE NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT, THEY ARE NOT EVIDENCE OF MALICIOUS SOFTWARES OR SPYWARES OR ANYTHING OF THE KIND!!!
... .... ... ... ... ...What the caller will then do, is to try to get you to go to their website and allow them to gain remote access to your computer... ... ... ... ... ...
-----------------DO NOT LET THEM DO THIS!!!!----------------
... ... ...if you allow them access then this is when there WILL be malicious softwares, spywares, trojans, malwares and others put on to your computer which will allow them to access all your personal data and track any new information that you put in.
I actually usually lead them down the garden path and pretend that I'm following their commands, this is because it costs them a lot of money to ring me - overseas costs - and also it wastes their time, when they could be calling and therefore conning someone else who's less in the know.
I hope that this helps and I advise you to download ADVANCED SYSTEM CLEANER (v.4) and CCLEANER, from reputable site http://www.cnet.com .
This site is a worldwide known independent review site for all things electronic and computer software wise. The software I have suggested are free and will (as their names suggest) help to protect and clean up your computer.
