these calls are 100% fraud. the first part of the fraud: you answering the phone or phoning them back and verifying you have a working number, then verifying your name & other info obtained illegally. even if you have had a payday loan in the past, IGNORE these calls. these persons are low-life scammers who have zero regard for the law.
in my state what they're phoning about is illegal (payday loans), so it's the equivalent of a drug dealer phoning and threatening court action. but how the scam works, they have bits and pieces of your info. when you answer phone and confirm a valid number, then the scare-script begins.
notify your employer and phone your police department. this scam should be on file with every police and federal agency as the scam is now out of control because people have been dumb enough to pay them. they're operating out of the Caribbean with outgoing calls from one source, then directing frightened consumers into calling them. your caller ID shows up on their system: BOOM, scam begins! don't verify ANY information with them, although there's nothing they can do with the info but attempt to scare a person.
and if you want to get even and help find these creeps here's one thing I did: gave them a credit card that was breached (Target, Home Depot, etc.) the card is no longer valid for use BUT if use attempted, it IMMEDIATELY sets off a fraud alert. you can then immediately get their location. in my case, their location was a Las Vegas Beauty and Barber Shop. the calls stopped for about 2 years after their fraud attempt/location was recorded by bank and law enforcement.
but calls are now starting up again, but less frequently because I don't answer their calls and don't return their call then use our SWEETTTTTTT new Panasonic phone and block their number. "unknown" numbers are also blocked automatically.
filing reports with FTC is a waste of time because these people are scammers who have ZERO regard for laws because they know they can't be found, especially with changing numbers frequently, but trust me, it's the same group, same voices and all. and not one of them has a degree between them while calling themselves litigators. they'll go away if there's no one to talk to :-)
