Yep, got the same call yesterday from a woman with an unmistakable Indian accent. Same thing, begged me for my account number, then said she'd call back next week. Instead someone called later that night. Putting a block on that number with my cell phone company. My only question is, how did they get my phone number? My cell number is by no means public. And they knew my first and last name...so that is a bigger concern to me.
Received call about lowering costs on my gas bill from 2012-02-09 20:03:42 3019467644. I told them that they are a bunch of crooks and to go get a job, then hung up.
Man with foreign accent. My guess is that the number is an internet number and that the operator is in foreign country.
NPR just reported on this scam that's going on. Individuals are knocking on doors or calling, saying they're representing the utilities and that they'll save you money if you provide account information. The advice is never give out account or personal information to unsolicited callers. If it is someone at the door, don't let them in the house, even if they are wearing an official looking outfit. If in doubt, call the utility directly or the police. Best bet is to file the incident, time and the calling number with the utility company. (Washington Gas has a contact form on their web site.)
Utility companies make appointments to send service personnel, and they don't ask for your account information that they have on file.
