DID YOU GET A CALL WITHIN THE LAST FEW DAYS THAT SEEMED LIKE JUST A HANGUP CALL? OR EVEN TRY CALLING BACK AN UNKNOWN NUMBER THAT CALLED YOU? If you answered the unknown number or called back the unknown number then you just alerted the scammers that you have a "live" phone number and your number was just added to the "to be called" list by one of these scam companies. I believe it works this way:
- a robo caller is set up using a spoofed # and starts calling 100,000s of numbers creating a list of answered calls
- that list is then sold to "Anne at account services" or any of the hundreds of scammers wanting you to answer
- they now can waste little time in their scamming endeavors
Well, I waste their time whenever I can. I kept a few of these scammers on the line for 1/2 hr and longer, time they couldn't use to scam Grandma with a "Your PC is infected" scare call or the popular "lower your credit debt" call. All scum of the earth calls. Best you can do is not answer any call you don't recognize and, if you can, call back the number from a phone number you don't care if sold to find out if you missed an important call (your insurance company with a question). Or, have a ton of fun with them asking them all sorts of stupid questions AND have them repeat everything 2 or 3 times.
Received my 1st call from this # today, no msg left, of course. When I googled the # a law firm's ad came up saying it was Allied Insurance, a debt collector. the law firm wanted to 'represent me' if the calls violated the legal limits for debt collectors - but I don't have any credit cards or loans! so, I'll set up as an "send all calls to voicemail" contact & report them to the FCC. The only place that takes action.
