I received one of those calls today. When the scammer said,"tax fraud", I know it was a scam. I've had the same Univ Degree accountant for 30 years, and have never been audited. Then I thought about the IRS area code. is in Washington, the area code is 202. So, I looked up the number and saw San Pedro. I believe the IRS in Calif is in LA. I then called and listened to the answering recording, and sure enough a middle east accent. Tomorrow I am going to report this to the FTC.
I got the same message just now and I asked what was the reference # relating to the issue and what is your name? This guy with a "HEAVY" middle easter accent says, "Gary Walton." Very unlikely, then he hung up quickly! I've dealt with the IRS in the past and they def don't do anything like that. Most contact is through snail mail, or initiated by you contacting them via phone, not the other way around.
I got a call just today about how I owed an x amount of money to the treasury/IRS.
I was taken by surprise when they mentioned that I had commited tax fraud and would be arrested and taken to jail for 6 months.
As a fool I paid some money and now realize what a huge fraud this was.
Never even answer this call or take it seriously. It is a huge lie.
I got a call too with the same Vm left. I called back with restricted and you can tell its just a scam, I was bothering them the same way they did to me and they sounded very unprofessional.
I suggest you call them also with restricted number *67 and their telephone number and mess with them also.
