"Internal Revenue Service. The reason of this call is to inform you that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against you to get more information about this case file. Please call immediately on our department number 315-370-1340. I repeat 315-370-1340. Thank you." This is the call I received and as far as I know the IRS contacts you by mail not phone.
I marked this as a prank because I know it was not the IRS. I will however call the IRS and the FCC to report it. I did try to call it back it rang once and went to a busy/disconnect tone.
This is a scam folks, being reported on numerous websites, by hundreds of people. You can (and SHOULD) report this to the authorities:
- Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484
- Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov -- add "IRS telephone scam" in the comments section of your complaint).
My husband kept them on the phone for an extended period of time to try to gather as much information on this scam as he could. They are trying to convince people that you owe the IRS money; instructing people to go to Walmart or CVS and purchase a debit card for the amount of back taxes "owed" and their collections agent will come to your home the next day, delivering you the "lawsuit" papers and you can settle your debt with the IRS immediately, on the spot. This is NOT how a disputed tax return with the IRS is handled. REPORT THEM!!!
Pre-recorded female voice says "this is a final official notice from IRS Internal Revenue Service, the reason of this call is to inform you that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against you, to get more information about this case file please call immidiatly on our department number 315-370-1340."
