Working in the electronics industry, I've received numerous phone calls from telemarketers offering a free subscription to their magazine. Once you answer their questions regarding job function and products that you recommend within your company, you will receive their magazine but not before you receive numerous calls from other companies offering you a free subscription to their magazine. In the end, you receive lots of magazines filled with advertisements and very little content. Now I simply say I'm retiring at the end of the month and everyone leaves me alone ...everyone except the people at this phone number.
I work for a magazine and subscribe to our competitors magazines. Yeah, I got one of these calls on my cell while I was on a conference call on my office line. It is a major pain in the [***], but I know what it is. They want the person that signed up for the magazine to answer a few qualifying questions. Like what industry, job function, products etc. are you involved with. This way the publication can share the "qualified" data with their advertisers and tout the list they are reaching and sell advertising in their magazines. Sometimes they'll even sell access to the "qualified" list itself. The biggest annoyance is the magazines often outsource to 3rd world countries that make the process cumbersome.
