The Ogdensburg City Police Department reportedly fielded as many as 40 such calls, beginning on Thursday and into Friday.
City Police Lt. Robert Wescott said in the case of one complainant, the callers seemed to already know personal information about the individual.
“Individuals call the victim claiming to be from the IRS and demand immediate payment to avoid legal action being taken against them by the IRS,” Mr. Wescott said. “One complainant who called reported the individuals on the phone already knew her Social Security number and of upcoming travel plans.”
Mr. Wescott said some of the incoming phone numbers his department is aware of being used by the scammers in the Ogdensburg area include 318-533-4510; 659-651-5092; and 213-448-5197.
