They left a message claiming to be from the "Department of Legal Affairs." What they said was pretty much a scripted, well-known scam: http://fox59.com/2014/03/24/consumer-alert-irs-warns-hoosiers-of-phone-scam/ . Lame.

Said he was Joe Miller from "Department of Legal Affairs".  It sounded like it was a recording that was slowed down to make the person sound differently than they normally would.  It sounded as bad as in the movie "Home Alone 2"...  "Hello... I'm... Joe... The father..."

Report the Calls to the real IRS here:
•report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.
•You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. Add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.

Do consider getting a call blocking device or phone.. You can google them and many are around $50.00 or so.If its a cell phone, some already have call blocking, if not, there are free apps on the web that will work for some. You can google this. If you have a smart phone, there is a free app called call control. Iphones appear to have apps also. Another one is called Mr. Number.

Last night I had a message on my machine from this phone number.  The callers voice was so muffled I barely understood the message.  It was a woman, R. Jackson, and claimed to be from the Department of Legal Affairs.  She said I needed to call her right back or have my attorney contact her.  I deleted the message.

Same scam, same scripted message within a couple of weeks apart. .. both from this phone number and from 909 281-2086.
Several months ago received a similar call from "Mrs. Jackson"  (from the IRS) with a script almost identical but purporting to representing the IRS -
This time it was from "Sean Miller" or "John Miller"  - hard to tell because of the obvious accent.       I can only assume they must fool some people with this "Office of Legal Affairs" gimmick or else they would have given up.  It's a shame to have people like this preying on innocent and gullible people, and it's too bad there's not an easier way to catch them.
Bottom line folks, legitimate collectors will (or should) mail you any documents backing up a legitimate claim.   Never fall for this ploy,.. any more than you would share your bank account information with that infamous Nigerian prince looking to park his money in your account.
