I got the same message as reported by a few folks already; salient points:
- male, accent almost definitely from India; age: 30's to 40's
- claimed his name was Steve Martin, like the actor, and that I owed money to the Treasury
- that this was his second attempt to contact me (first I'd heard of this)
- and that I needed to call back to 323-723-3454 or face a magistrate court or grand jury
He ended with "Please help us to help you".
After quickly realizing how ridiculously stupid was the scam, I then wondered how desperate must someone be to work for whoever is running this operation. Maybe the person who identifies himself as Steve Martin and these other callers got scammed and are trying to earn back the money they lost.
Just got a threatening voicemail from a "Steve Martin" as well. Number was (323)723-3678. I knew this had to be a scam so I looked it up and am not surprised to learn that it's happened to other people as well. Looks like they use different numbers too. I will report the number to the FCC as others have said. However, I don't know what good that will do considering so many people still seem to be getting the same call.
I received the same call this evening. I blame facebook and the messenger APP. This is why they shouldn't be granted permission to access our photos, contact lists, etc. Because foreigners with hacking skills steal the information and prey on innocent people ....
I too received a call from a man with a very thick accent who purported to be from the US Treasury. He said this was my 2nd and final chance to respond in order to avoid be called before a federal magistrate. Told him to **** off and hung up. I am now hunting down the reporting mechanism for the FBI and FTC. Appreciate if the earlier poster would provide links for reporting the scam calls.
