Got a call today, my caller ID shows the number is in Illinois. Looked like a weird number so I didn't answer it. I called back and it said the phone call could not be completed as dialed. Probably spam!
Just got a call from this number by a computer with a recorded message to the effect that there was a problem with my credit card and I could fix it by pressing 9. I did and was connect to a fellow with very strong Indian accent who launched into his sales pitch concerning lower credit card rates.
I asked him what his name was and he tried three times to continue his script. I introduced myself by first name and asked him how he was. Obviously uncomfortable, he said his name was Jason John... He didn't sound like a Jason John.
I told him I was having trouble hearing him and asked him if he could hear me. When he said he could I said "Listen to me carefully, please remove this phone number from your calling list and never contact me again."
This is the only correct way to handle these boiler room operations, if you don't ask they won't remove your number. If you are rude or worse they won't remove your number and may put you on more call lists.
I used to work for a professional telemarketing company that NEVER behaved that way. They have rules to follow and if you're pleasant and clear, you give them the most opportunities to do the right thing. Otherwise called your state and federal trade commissions.
The callers are the drug-addicted "card services" scammers, who call us, pretending to be associated with our credit card companies, in an attempt to fool us into giving them our credit card numbers, so they can rip us off. People that have given their card number to these junkies have suffered severe financial losses. Beware of these lowlifes, and warn others, before they are cheated!
Just got a call from 331-000-0001- I answered it and it was about lowering my credit card rate. I stayed
on the line and pressed one to speak with someone. When they answered, I requested that my number
be removed from their list as it is on the DO NOT CALL list. I was called a [***], etc.... and hung up on.
Guess they are the exception to the rule.
