I got a call from this number yesterday. However, it showed up on caller ID like a Mexican phone number. Ex: 52-331-372-2658. What's strange and sent up a red flag is that after the fact, caller ID showed the number as an Illinois phone number 331-372-2658.
Since I have family members in Mexico, I answered. It was weird because a nephew had messaged me to tell me he'd be in town this weekend and he'd swing by to see us, which he usually does when he's in town. So, when I answered this call the guy on the other end is like Auntie, I'll be by on Sunday morning. And, I'm like ok. Just give me a call before you get here.... It wasnt my nephew. I called his Dad to ask if his son was in Mexico and he said no. After I told him what happened he called his son and my nephew called me back and said it wasn't him who called. Kinda freaked me out. I never give out my cell number. This clown tried to call me 3 times this morning. When he noticed I blocked his call on the Illinois number, he called on the Mexican number. Left no voice mail. Be careful out there guys! These scam calls are getting more and more elaborate.
Yes it's a scam. A variation on the Grandparents scam. A family member (cousin, nephew or someone else) calls you (family) because you are the only one who can help them as they have just been in a accident, or been arrested or need money for a plane ticket to come visit you or some other thing. It's a real emergency (according to them) and you (being their family) are the only one who can help.
It could be $100 or $1,000 or more.
It's a scam-they are not family, they are criminals and you will never see them or your money again.
Do not answer unknown calls and do not call them back.
