To clarify my above comment: the link possibly being someone at the car company or the finance company providing information of older people (parents) obtained from auto loan paperwork, as they are more suseptible to scams..
There is obviously some kind of scammer ring using this number. Yesterday, some guy called my house claiming to be a cousin from Mexico (a cousin whom I haven't seen in years). He asked for my cell number because he said he was going to fly down here to visit, so I gave it to him. Today, he called my cell saying that Mexican customs wouldn't give him his money and belongings because he had to pay to a fee for everything (it's hard to tell what really goes on at Mexican customs as there's a lot of corruption). He then put this lady on the phone with who claimed to be an employee for Mexican customs. She explained the situation, then she asked me to wire $600+ via Money Gram. That's when big red flags went up. I called my other cousin and asked him to confirm if his brother was really flying from Mexico. He called his brother in Mexico, and guess what? His brother was at work! This guy who called claiming to be my cousin was not my cousin! Later on, the lady called my cell to confirm if I had sent the money to bail my "cousin" out of the situation. I said no because my cousin wanted to speak with this guy who was claiming to be my cousin. As soon they heard those words, they hung up immediately and never called back again. Watch out! They're real good and seem to take notes of the conversation, so keep your guard up.
