********* This is an elderly scam. Phone Number is 331-925-4561, but they may have used multiple phone numbers ******
They called my elderly father who is hard of hearing, and said "Hello, Uncle. It is your favorite nephew!" My father replied, "Hello, Stefan!" My incredibly sweet, elderly father did not realize he just gave the con artist the name the scammer would use to impersonate a family member. We receive international calls frequently, so this call did not seem unusual at first.
My "cousin" told my father that he was en route from South America to visit family in the US, but he got detained at the airport in Mexico for having undeclared cash in his suitcase that was beyond the allowed limit. Mexican customs authorities were holding him at the airport and he needed $1,000 to get released and catch his connecting flight to the U.S. They talked for some time about and then got off the phone.
Once off the phone, I believe these con artists then proceeded to research my family online because they called back knowing a lot of personal information (names, cities where we live in South America and the US, etc.). All the names matched... my elderly father believed this was actually our relative that he knew who needed help. Anything that seemed "odd" about my cousin could be excused due to the stress and shock of the legal trouble that just happened.
They continued to call my dad throughout the day keeping him informed of the emergency. A fake attorney by the name of MARTA ISABEL MORENO NUNO called my father. A fake customs officer with the last name GONZALEZ called my father. My fake cousin continued to call.
Luckily, I was able to stop everything before my father gave them money. I stress to you, throughout the day, these people researched us. They knew my name and the city where I live. They took time to develop this.
THIS IS A TEAM OF CON ARTISTS!
The fake Mexican attorney used the name MARTA ISABEL MORENO NUNO.
The fake Mexican police captain used the name GONZALEZ.
The fake cousin used the name of a real relative...
These people are the worst people in the world. I pray they will burn in eternity (I hope).
