I also got a call from these guys and was suspicious and I do actually owe the IRS some money. So i googled the number and found lots of posts so i decided to harass them back!!! After the whole day of harassing them the guy (Daniel) finally gives in and tells me his name is Abdul Bashir and he is from Abu Dhabi - they are no different to the nigerian scum
Daniel Smith from the IRS called (with a very thick accent - Daniel Smith? I think not) and left a message for me using my full name. He said this was a criminal investigation and that I must call them back immediately for my own good.
Call from a 'sheriff's office' firstly. Then told I need to call this 347 number immediately; claiming I could be in some serious trouble for tax fraud and I need to contact this Agent White at the 347 number. I called my lawyer first, he did about 2 minutes of research and concluded it was fraudulent. IRS cannot call you; they'll send a letter.
Received a call with the caller ID of the DuPage County Sherrif's office, from someone identifying themselves as "James O'Connor" saying that there's a federal complaint from officer Sean Woods of the IRS and to either turn myself in to the nearest police department or call 347-418-0373 to talk to the officer within the next 30 minutes. If not, he'll "be forced to send my investigating cops" to my door step and place of employment.
There are a lot of reports going back several years from this type of caller ID fraud.
Was tempted to call back and play along, but didn't want to waste my time.
Interestingly, his Indian accent sounded a bit like an Irish accent, like someone doing a bad Irish impersonation.
This was the same experience noted elsewhere on here. Called me, said I owed, told me to call back and ask for Michael Black. I called back and asked for extension 342. It was the same foreign voice that had called me one minute earlier. He asked who I wanted to speak to, and I said extension 342. He said oh yes, this is me, Michael Black. So I hung up, called back said I was reporting them to the IRS. Before I could get the S out in IRS, he hung up.
