They said they were calling on behalf NYPD asking for donations. They must know my husband and neighbor are cops? We donate to many organizations police related, specially for disable or fallen Heroes families. They asked for a $10 pledge, I told them we will donate when I get the info on the mail. (So I can verify if this is a real organization) they asked for a credit card. I said I'd be sending a check. But very annoying to receive these calls on Sunday morning! It didn't sound like something any police officer fundraiser would do for sure
You also be aware the most of that $10 will go into their pocket and not to the NYPD, assuming they give anything at all to that police organization. It is always wise to donate directly to the charity instead of some cold calling scum sitting in a cubicle trying to rip you off for your money.
Most states have some type of database to verify charities and their FUNDRAISERS. A search "new york charity search" results https://www.charitiesnys.com/RegistrySearch/search_charities_action.jsp search "new york police" results are multiple organizations with like or similar names. Many don't look current and the state of New York doesn't list "fundraisers" associated with their charities.
That type of search for state registered charities doesn't include national agencies that may be calling. One example would be search "sos wa police troopers" results are a Florida registered charity using alternate name "National Police & Trooper Association" see https://www.sos.wa.gov/charities/search_detail.aspx?charity_id=5457 that does list fundraisers used: All very generic names.
