Damn! They said they were AARP (of which I am a member) with a quick survey about Medicare. 3 questions, I answered "yes" to all. Then they asked for my email address so they could send me survey results. I gave it to them.
Afterwards I thought better of it, called back the number, Got a message saying "press 1 to be on our do-not-call list" - nothing identifying them as AARP. Well, now they have my phone number, my email address, and my voice saying "yes".
Number called, was silent, then background noise kicked in as if the phone was muted at first. Lots of talking, like there was a party going on or loud TV, then someone groaned twice, then went silent again. Weird.
I received a call from 1-347-502-2530 at 7:15 PM on December 3rd 2013. I didn't answer but the answering machine kicked in. It sounded like static then like a party was going on. Then a mans voice said are you there? can you hear me? then hung up. I researched the number on the internet and quite a few people got the same call. Some didn't answer and hung up, but some did answer and the man said he was from AARP and had a 3 question survey, the person who was a member of AARP answered yes to all 3 questions. ( the person didn't say what the questions were) then the man asked to verify the person's name, phone# and e-mail address. The person gave all the information he asked for. Some people tried to call the number back and a recording said, call can't be completed as dialed. I think this might be a phishing scam to get people's personal information and use it against them later.
