Hi Whitney. I just did some research myself and found a site that answered the question. I and others did get voice mail about being a lawsuit being filed against "me" (they didn't give a name just "filed against you"). Its a NYC number (as you probably know but I live in Chicago so I had to look it up). They give a call back number that seems to vary. The recording is that it's the IRS who is filing suit and to call back immediately. Our local TV station here just did an expose on this and it's a scam. The IRS will ALWAYS contact via mail or in person (If necessary). Just so you know in case they call again.
Got a call 20 minutes ago. Voicemail cut off beginning of message left number 305-998-2344 to call back. I saw New York on caller ID and have family that lives there. Wondering if something happened called back on work phone not cell and said it was IRS. I said just received call from you and he asked for my phone number. Gave it to him and he asked for my name. I said you should have it. He gave me my name from 4 years ago. Did not have my married name. I said if this was the IRS you should know my new name. He hung up! PHONE COMPANIES SHOULD SHUT THESE PHONE NUMBERS OFF!!!! VERY ANNOYED, HAPPY FAMILY IS OKAY AND WAS NOT AN EMERGENCY BE CAREFUL WHAT INFORMATION YOU GIVE
Automated call came at 5:45am on 2/24. Female voice claiming to be with the IRS, stating that they have been trying to get in contact. Call identified as coming from New York. I hung up before listening to the first few seconds as knew it was a scam.
