Hi Whitney. I just did some research myself and found a site that answered the question. I and others did get voice mail about being a lawsuit being filed against "me" (they didn't give a name just "filed against you"). Its a NYC number (as you probably know but I live in Chicago so I had to look it up). They give a call back number that seems to vary. The recording is that it's the IRS who is filing suit and to call back immediately. Our local TV station here just did an expose on this and it's a scam. The IRS will ALWAYS contact via mail or in person (If necessary). Just so you know in case they call again.
this number left a message saying it was the IRS and to call and discuss a case number. I called, they threatened me, they were rude, pushy, yelled at me. Told me I would go to prison for 5 years if I didn't pay, they said that three times to me. If I were an elderly without anyone to reach out to, I may have given them a credit card number because they were soooo threatening and very scary.
Adding to the fray......I got a call on 02/24 @ 10:42am. Same scam as above. I wasn't home at the time so they were kind enough to leave a message....female voice, who informed the phone recorder of the impending doom headed my way if I don't call them immediately.
A shame really... this behavior, outright harassment & thievery, is allowed to continue by corporate phone companies who have the wherewithal to not only stop it but prevent it. This site doesn't even offer a scam selection under Call Type. Step up people.
